Beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle.

Ely was born and raised in Orocovis Puerto Rico, a mountain town where he completed a 9th grade education. He worked on the family farm growing and harvesting crops, and tending to the animals along with his 8 brothers and sisters. His youthful agility served him well, especially when escaping a near deadly attack by a very aggressive bull.

When he was 18 he joined the US Army. He defended the Panama Canal, ascended to squad leader, then sergeant. He also learned to cook during his 5 years of service where he was in charge of the kitchen. He often spoke of his time in service and took joy in singing songs learned during his tours.

He returned home to his village but soon left looking for better opportunity in the US.

He eventually found work with the post office for whom he worked 31 years in a variety of jobs.

In 1952 his cousin Margarita gave him a winning lottery ticket. She introduced him to his future wife Maria D Bonilla, his beloved "Loli". They married in 1954 and spent 62 loving and devoted years together.

His other greatest joy was helping to raise and care for his three grandchildren: Vincent, Valerie, and Victoria.

Ely is survived by wife Maria, and son Arthur.

A kinder gentler man cannot be found. His gentle presence will be missed but we are comforted in knowing that he now rests with the Lord.
